Volkswagen Group has achieved significant growth in electric vehicle sales across Europe, with battery electric vehicles comprising approximately 40 percent of its order book in the region. The company’s electric vehicle order intake in Europe increased more than 60 percent in the third quarter compared to the prior-year period, substantially outpacing overall order growth of 4 percent across all powertrains.
The surge in electric vehicle demand has been attributed to several factors, including elevated fuel prices and the availability of affordable entry-level electric models. A particularly notable contributor to this growth is the recently introduced Electric Urban Car Family, which includes the Volkswagen ID. Polo, ID. Cross02, Škoda Epiq, and CUPRA Raval models. These four vehicles have generated nearly 150,000 orders since their recent launch. In terms of overall European deliveries, one in five vehicles delivered by Volkswagen Group is now fully electric.
Martin Sander, a member of the Group’s Extended Executive Committee for Sales, highlighted the company’s performance in its home market, noting that the trend toward all-electric vehicles is significantly accelerating. The Volkswagen Group’s battery electric vehicle market share in Europe has grown, rising from 18 to 20 percent after nine months. The Group maintains a commanding position in the European plug-in vehicle market, accounting for 23.9 percent of sales, substantially ahead of the second-place BMW Group at 8.7 percent.
Globally, the company faces mixed results. In China, the Group’s traditional stronghold, sales have declined sharply as a market-wide challenge. However, new locally developed electric models have begun to generate positive momentum in the significantly declining Chinese market, with electrified vehicle deliveries in the third quarter up approximately 30 percent compared to the same quarter the previous year. In contrast, the United States market experienced a significant contraction in battery electric vehicle sales following the expiration of government subsidy programs, with deliveries falling 78 percent amid continued pressure from import tariffs.
