Ahead of US midterms, voters are frustrated with Trump, want change: Poll

An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released Thursday reveals significant voter frustration with President Trump’s policies as the nation approaches its November 3 congressional midterm elections. The survey of over 1,100 US adults found that 80 percent of respondents believe the country requires either substantial change or complete overhaul in its governance structure.

Economic issues dominate voter concerns, with 85 percent identifying the economy as a critical factor in their voting decisions. Approximately eight in 10 registered voters disapprove of Trump’s handling of living costs, while roughly three-quarters disapprove of his overall economic performance. Only about one-third of registered voters view the Republican president favorably or approve of his job performance. The pervasive desire for change poses considerable challenges to the Republican Party’s efforts to maintain control of both chambers of Congress.

Democrats and independents are substantially more likely than Republicans to seek a complete overhaul, though even Republican voters express appetite for significant policy shifts. Among Republicans, 45 percent want substantial change while 13 percent seek upheaval. Immigration and crime rates rank as top concerns for 45 percent of voters, with Republican voters emphasizing these issues more frequently than Democrats. Healthcare remains important to 69 percent of voters, while 64 percent cite the war on Iran as a priority.

Other policy areas drew varying levels of concern. Artificial intelligence was identified as a substantial issue by 35 percent of voters, while transgender issues registered significantly lower at 12 percent. Despite widespread grievances, civic participation remains valued across party lines, with two-thirds of registered voters calling voting in the upcoming election “extremely” important and an additional 20 percent rating it as “very” important.
