Airbnb.org Aims for 1 Million Free Nights a Year, Funded Partly by a Dime a Booking

Airbnb announced a new funding mechanism for its nonprofit subsidiary Airbnb.org, beginning this week with a 10-cent contribution from each booking on its platform. The company stated this per-stay donation exceeds the contributions made by competing services Booking.com and Vrbo.

Airbnb.org, established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, aims to collect $500 million over a five-year period through the per-booking contributions alongside grants from Airbnb itself, foundations, and individual donors including hosts on the platform. Airbnb covers the nonprofit’s operational expenses, with the majority of funding expected to come directly from the company.

The organization has set an ambitious target of providing 1 million free nights of accommodation annually by the end of the five-year period. This represents a tenfold increase from the approximately 100,000 nights the nonprofit is projected to deliver in the current year, according to Christoph Gorder, executive director of Airbnb.org.

Beyond the funding initiative, Airbnb.org is expanding its service offerings. A program assisting families traveling within Mexico for medical purposes launched in October 2025 and has since expanded to operate in 16 countries. Additionally, the organization is preparing to launch a domestic violence support initiative called Safe Havens, with a pilot program scheduled to begin in the coming period. The nonprofit continues to focus on housing people displaced by natural disasters, conflicts, and other emergencies.
