‘American History X’ Director Tony Kaye Takes On Leicester’s Giant Monsters in Short ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Tony Kaye, known for directing “American History X” and “Detachment,” will helm a short film titled “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” The five-minute project blends documentary and reality drama elements, drawing on Leicester’s creative community for its cast and crew.

The film is being produced by Hiu Man Chan, a film entrepreneur and academic at De Montfort University. Production began on Friday, with cinematographer Louis Lingjaerde (“Vipers”) attached to the project. The narrative will develop organically around the selected participants, capturing spontaneous moments and real human interactions as it examines whether people can develop understanding and affection across differences.

The production utilizes Leicester Monsters, a public art initiative run by BID Leicester that features oversized creature sculptures installed throughout the city’s downtown area to encourage foot traffic. The monsters were created by Bristol-based Designs in Air. The surreal presence of these sculptures serves as the backdrop for exploring themes of diversity, belonging, freedom, and commitment within one of the U.K.’s most ethnically diverse cities.

Kaye has referenced a 1986 commercial he directed featuring a dog, cat, and mouse gathered around a coal fire set to the song “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” as inspiration for the project’s thematic concerns. The director drew a parallel between that long-ago imagery and humanity’s fundamental challenge of coexisting peacefully.

Kaye’s feature directorial debut, “American History X” (1998), earned Edward Norton an Academy Award nomination and became known for its turbulent post-production process. He has since directed “Detachment” (2011), which won multiple international festival awards, and the documentary “Lake of Fire” (2006). Beyond features, Kaye has built an extensive portfolio in music videos and commercials for major brands.
