America's largest budget airline reports 71% jump in airfare

Frontier Airlines, the country’s largest budget airline, announced substantial fare increases in the third quarter as it grappled with elevated jet fuel expenses. The carrier’s average fare revenue per passenger climbed to $67.82, up from $39.74 in the comparable period last year. When including ancillary fees for services such as checked and carry-on baggage, the airline’s total revenue per passenger increased 30% year-over-year to $138.22.

Despite the significant price hikes, passenger demand remained resilient. Frontier carried more than 9.8 million passengers in the quarter, representing an 18% increase from the prior year and adding approximately 1.5 million additional travelers. The airline characterized market demand as strong even at the elevated fare levels.

Financial performance proved challenging despite the volume gains. Frontier recorded a net loss of $104 million compared with a $77 million loss a year earlier, partly due to a $134 million charge related to the return of certain Airbus aircraft. Excluding this and other one-time charges, the airline reported adjusted profit of $40 million. The company’s fuel expenses surged 82% to $425 million, reflecting the industrywide pressure on airline profitability.

Looking forward, Frontier offered a wide range of guidance for the fourth quarter, projecting adjusted earnings could range from a loss of 15 cents per share to earnings of as much as 5 cents per share. The airline’s stock rose close to 12% following the report. Frontier has maintained its position as the country’s largest discount carrier, a status solidified after competing budget airline Spirit Airlines ceased operations earlier this year.
