Sentinel 6 is a science fiction anime project currently in development that centers on an Afro-futurist vision set in 2429, following a catastrophic conflict called the Great Phoenix War that devastated Earth centuries earlier. The series was conceived in 2019 by writer Pat Stout and producer Asa Palmer through their company Sable Kudzu. The narrative follows six young protagonists—three men and three women—who are awakened as sentinels capable of wielding combined powers to protect their world from an intergalactic terrorist threat in a post-apocalyptic, class-divided society.
The project has attracted backing from professional athletes Michael Carter-Williams of the NBA and Jamaal Williams of the NFL, who joined as executive producers and financial investors. The series is planned as a TV-MA rated program comprising 11 to 12 thirty-minute episodes. LeSean Thomas, known for work on productions including Yasuke and The Boondocks, wrote the pilot and serves as consulting producer. After Palmer’s unexpected death earlier in the year, Carter-Williams and Williams fully funded the pilot in late 2025. The creative team drew inspiration from Western animated series including Static Shock, Samurai Jack, and Batman Beyond.
The production has been awarded to Creative Freaks, a Japan-based animation studio headquartered in Kyoto. Bang Zoom!, a voice-over studio based in Burbank, will handle reverse localization into Japanese, making this one of the first anime produced by a Japanese studio with English-language priority. The project reportedly represents an opportunity to increase representation of Black characters and narratives within the anime medium, addressing a historical underrepresentation that creators identified as central to their vision.
