Alabama advanced one position to No. 6 in the latest AP Top 25 poll following a dominant victory over then-No. 16 Mississippi State, in which the Crimson Tide scored 56 points. The performance marked a historic achievement, as Mississippi State’s 23 points represented the most ever allowed by a ranked SEC home team during a regulation game. Indiana, previously undefeated, dropped to No. 7 after the Crimson Tide leapfrogged them in the rankings. Mississippi State fell one spot to No. 17 following the loss.
Alabama’s next challenge comes against No. 2 Georgia in a home matchup at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday. This represents a significant SEC contest between two prominent programs. The Crimson Tide hold a recent regular-season advantage over the Bulldogs, having won the last two such meetings, though Georgia defeated Alabama in the SEC Championship Game last year.
Other notable polling shifts included Florida’s sharp decline from No. 8 to No. 16 following a 45-17 loss to Missouri. The Tigers, who delivered that upset, jumped 11 spots from No. 25 to No. 14. Iowa dropped six positions to No. 20 after suffering a 31-14 defeat to No. 6 Ohio State. Pittsburgh earned the sole new entry to the rankings after compiling a 5-0 record and defeating Virginia Tech on Friday night. Kentucky, despite a victory in overtime over South Carolina, fell out of the top 25.
Texas maintained the top position, receiving 61 of 70 first-place votes despite being on a bye week. Georgia, Miami, and Indiana collected the remaining first-place votes. The Longhorns prepare to face Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry next week. In the Big 12, three undefeated teams positioned themselves in the top 15: BYU at No. 8, Texas Tech at No. 11, and Utah at No. 12, all maintaining viable paths toward playoff consideration.
