South Australia has become the first jurisdiction in Australia to receive Michelin star designations, marking a significant milestone for the country’s culinary landscape. The state awarded stars to 11 restaurants in total, with Magill Estate Restaurant in Rosslyn Park being the only venue to receive two stars. The remaining 10 establishments each received one star.
The distinction comes as a result of South Australia’s government independently funding the evaluation process. According to reports, the state government commissioned incognito inspectors to visit and assess dining venues throughout the region. This explains why no other Australian states have received recognition in the guide. The state government has not publicly disclosed the financial investment made for this initiative, though Tourism Minister Emily Bourke characterized it as a strategic investment in developing the region as a tourism destination.
This development follows Michelin’s prior unsuccessful attempts to establish a presence across Australia at the national level. The guide had previously approached the country’s national tourism board on multiple occasions without reaching an agreement. South Australia’s independent approach represents a departure from previous negotiations and demonstrates the state’s commitment to securing Michelin recognition.
The expansion into South Australia represents part of Michelin’s broader growth throughout the Oceania region. New Zealand achieved distinction as the first destination in Oceania to be included in the guide when it joined in July, having committed to pay NZ$6.3m over three years for its inclusion.
Beyond the star recipients, the South Australian guide encompasses more than 70 additional restaurants recognized through various categories, including the Bib Gourmand designation, which identifies establishments offering quality cuisine at more accessible price points.
