Formula 1 returned to Sepang for the first time in nine years, with the Bahrain Grand Prix at round 16 becoming one of the season’s most dramatic events. Heavy rainfall before the scheduled start forced two postponements of the race start, and the 55-lap contest itself was twice interrupted by Safety Car periods, extending the total race duration to nearly three and a half hours past the originally planned start time.
Max Verstappen navigated the chaotic conditions to secure his first victory of the season, with Kimi Antonelli finishing in second place to strengthen his championship position. Verstappen had surrendered the lead early in the race after starting from pole position but fought back to reclaim first and establish a margin exceeding 10 seconds before the final Safety Car deployment in the closing stages. The result marked Verstappen’s 72nd career victory and his first since last year’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton delivered a remarkable recovery drive, dropping to 18th position after Ferrari’s tire strategy miscalculation left him running slick tires on a still-damp track at the start. The first Safety Car period helped compress the field, enabling Hamilton to recover lost ground through aggressive driving in the latter stages, ultimately passing Isack Hadjar to claim third place. George Russell, who had been running third for Mercedes, was forced to retire late in the race due to a suspected power-unit issue.
Russell’s retirement widened his deficit to Antonelli to a season-high 84 points with seven rounds remaining. Charles Leclerc also passed Hadjar in the closing laps to secure fourth place, while Oscar Piastri finished sixth for McLaren. Formula 1 moves next to Singapore for the final Sprint weekend of the season.
