Bank of America hired 1,000 contractors to patch software flaws exposed by Anthropic's Mythos

Bank of America has engaged external contractors to help remediate software vulnerabilities that were exposed through advanced artificial intelligence models, including Anthropic’s Mythos. Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan disclosed during a Wednesday interview that the bank brought on 1,000 contractors in the second quarter to support patching efforts, who continue working alongside the bank’s existing workforce of 3,000 personnel dedicated to this area.

The bank allocated spending in the “couple hundred million plus” range during the third quarter toward software remediation and regulatory issues related to anti-money laundering compliance, according to remarks Moynihan made to analysts. These efforts represent one of the first major U.S. financial institutions to publicly quantify both the staffing and financial investments required to protect systems from vulnerabilities that frontier AI models can identify.

Moynihan characterized the situation as presenting a double-sided challenge for the financial services industry. While AI capabilities can enhance productivity and reduce operational costs, the ability of advanced models like Mythos to detect and potentially exploit decades-old software flaws has compelled companies into intensive and costly defensive operations. The bank’s executive emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance while acknowledging the complexity of the dynamic, particularly given that some vendors providing such services may themselves represent potential risks.

Looking ahead, Moynihan indicated that the elevated spending on remediation should be temporary in nature. He suggested that once vulnerabilities are patched, the ongoing expenses should decline as the volume of work moves through the pipeline. Simultaneously, the bank is pursuing offensive applications of AI technology, with approximately 130 internal AI projects generating cost savings anticipated to grow from $300 million currently to $700 million in 2027.
