Barbara Jay, a jazz singer who built a career spanning several decades in British jazz, passed away aged 94. Beginning her professional singing career in the early 1950s as a vocalist with dance bands, Jay progressed to increasingly prominent roles within the jazz community.
In 1953, saxophonist Pete King engaged Jay as the vocalist for Ronnie Scott’s nine-piece jazz group, which was positioning itself as the leading jazz outfit in the United Kingdom. Despite the challenging working conditions typical of touring musicians at the time, Jay remained with Scott’s band longer than other female vocalists and became an integral part of the group’s performances. She maintained friendships with both Scott and King throughout her life and frequently appeared at their London club on Frith Street.
Jay’s career included periods working with various ensembles and orchestras across Europe. A significant turning point came when she joined tenor saxophonist Tommy Whittle’s group after deputizing for another vocalist at a London dance hall. The partnership evolved into both a musical and personal collaboration, with Jay and Whittle marrying in 1967. The relationship lasted until Whittle’s death in 2013. During this period, Jay also took on the responsibility of raising Whittle’s two sons. She worked with Whittle to operate a successful jazz club at a London pub for a decade while continuing to perform with various groups, including the Pizza Express All-Stars.
Jay’s most notable achievement came from a 1993 project in which she developed the Ella Fitzgerald Songbook, a tribute concert show featuring multiple vocalists and backed by a jazz quartet. The production proved highly successful, running approximately 400 performances across Britain and internationally. A later variant titled Ladies in Jazz extended the concept further. Beyond these theatrical projects, Jay recorded albums and remained active in the jazz community through performances and educational talks about the music industry until her health declined.
