Camel Racing, a Sect and Workplace Democracy: Tallinn Fest Sets Docs Lineup, Special Screenings

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) revealed its documentary competition lineups and special screening selections as part of programming for its 30th edition, scheduled for Nov. 6-2. The announcement expanded the festival’s overall program with additions across multiple categories.

The Doc@PÖFF International and Baltic competitions feature documentaries exploring diverse human experiences. Subjects range from camel racing in the Sinai Peninsula to an examination of workplace democracy within a Michelin-starred restaurant, queer cultural memory, and control mechanisms within a Danish Christian sect. The selection also includes stories centered on fishermen, dancers, artists, and individuals rebuilding lives or defending their homeland. The festival noted that Baltic documentaries and feature films will again compete in separate programs this year.

Marianna Kaat, curator of the documentary competitions, stated that filmmakers demonstrated innovative approaches to storytelling that expand documentary cinema’s possibilities. She emphasized that the selected works encourage closer examination of subject matter and resist simplified interpretations, which she described as particularly relevant in contemporary media landscapes.

One highlighted documentary, Father’s House, employs reenactments performed by actors including Trine Dyrholm and David Dencik to depict experiences of former sect members. Former members participate by advising performers and observing dramatizations of their experiences.

The Special Screenings program presents seven films with connections to Estonia or festival participants. These include three world premieres, one international premiere, and established films such as Stephen Frears’ Dangerous Liaisons and Tim Blake Nelson’s The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd. The program encompasses intimate creative portraits, romantic drama, and other genres, with subjects including architect Louis Kahn, actor Jüri Järvet, and musician Svyatoslav Vakarchuk of Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy.
