Production has commenced in Venice on “Upgraded 2,” the follow-up to Amazon MGM Studios’ 2024 romantic comedy “Upgraded.” Camila Mendes returns to reprise her role as Ana Santos, an auction house intern navigating the world of high-society art, while Leslie Bibb joins the cast in an unspecified role. The sequel shifts Ana’s story to the Venice Biennale, the world’s oldest contemporary art fair, which serves as a central element of the film’s plot.
Director Becca Gleason has taken over helming duties from original director Carlson Young for the sequel, which began principal photography on October 21. Filming in Venice has taken place at multiple notable locations, including the terrace of Ca’ Giustinian, the Biennale’s headquarters overlooking the Grand Canal, the neo-Gothic Palazzo Franchetti near the Accademia bridge which functions as a Biennale exhibition space, and the Moro Venice restaurant. Archie Renaux returns from the first film to play William, a wealthy Englishman connected to the art world.
Luke Roberts and Justin Matthews, the screenwriters of the original film, have written the sequel’s screenplay. Following approximately two weeks of shooting on the Venice lagoon, the production will relocate to Rome for an additional 33 days of principal photography. Italy’s Luca Tranchino serves as production designer, while the Italian production company Colorado Film functions as executive producer. The production team includes producers Mike Karz and Bill Bindley from Gulfstream Pictures, along with producers from Honor Role, Luber Roklin Entertainment, and Tempo Production.
