ChatGPT’s ‘Intelligent UI’ update fills its responses with pictures, charts, and buttons

OpenAI is rolling out a new Intelligent UI capability in ChatGPT designed to enhance how the chatbot communicates with users. The feature allows the artificial intelligence to generate interactive visual elements such as diagrams, charts, forms, buttons, and other graphical components to accompany its text-based responses.

The company trained its GPT-6 model to determine when visual presentations would be more effective than text alone and how to properly format these interactive elements within responses. Example use cases include displaying annotated diagrams of mechanical systems like bicycles with clickable parts, generating visual tutorials for games like Mahjong organized into scrollable categories, and creating functional tools embedded directly in chat conversations such as calculators and bill-splitting applications.

The Intelligent UI feature arrives alongside the broader rollout of OpenAI’s GPT-6 models, specifically the Sol and Luna variants. Beyond enabling visual responses, GPT-6 reportedly improves ChatGPT’s web search capabilities and allows it to provide partial answers to users while continuing to gather additional information in real time. OpenAI also states that GPT-6 demonstrates enhanced resistance to attempts to circumvent its safety guidelines.

The rollout began this week for subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers, with expansion to the Go and free user tiers scheduled for later in the week. Premium subscribers gain access to the mid-range GPT-6 Sol model, while lower-tier and free users receive the more resource-efficient GPT-6 Luna version.
