Several new cast members have been added to House of Guerrero, an independent boxing drama that marks director Gina Rodriguez’s feature directorial debut. The film reunites Rodriguez with producer Justin Baldoni, who previously collaborated with her on ABC’s Jane the Virgin. Production began in Los Angeles and California’s Imperial Valley.
Chino Pacas, a prominent figure in the Música Mexicana movement known for his album Que Sigan Llegando las Pacas, joined the project alongside Clave Especial, a chart-topping group in the same genre who recently released the single “Ferrari.” Vic Blends, an acclaimed barber and entrepreneur with a substantial social media presence, was also cast. Emily Austin, who brings real-world sports broadcasting experience from her work covering fights for DAZN, makes her feature acting debut as a boxing announcer.
The film, which began production recently, features a script from Bernardo Cubría, who previously worked on Acapulco. Based on an original story by Rodriguez and Cubría, House of Guerrero centers on a formerly promising boxer attempting to return to competition and rebuild his life. Carlos Sanson Jr. plays the lead role, with additional cast members including Rosario Dawson, George Lopez, Becky G, and Tokischa. Clayton J. Barber and Eric Brown, who worked on Creed III and John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum respectively, are handling fight choreography.
The production is being financed through multiple entities including 1Community, Rodriguez’s I Can And I Will Productions, and Wayfarer Studios. Three Point Capital provided tax credit financing for the project. According to 1Community founder Scott Budnick, the new cast members were selected for their ability to connect authentically with audiences and their established followings within the Latin community and beyond.
