Cholera cases surge in Yemen as conflict intensifies, WHO says

The World Health Organization reported a significant surge in suspected cholera cases across Yemen, with infections rising to 647 in the week ending October 3 from 217 cases recorded in the week of September 6-12. The organization attributed the spike to intensified armed conflict that has displaced more than 200,000 people, forcing civilians into camps with inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean water and health services.

Five southwestern governorates—Abyan, Lahij, al-Dhalea, Taiz and Aden—account for roughly 92 percent of the reported cases, according to WHO data. The disease has also emerged in remote displacement camps in Hadramout province in the eastern part of the country, where medical access remains severely constrained. Over the course of this year to date, Yemen has recorded 8,034 suspected cases and 27 deaths, with a quarter of those cases occurring within the four weeks preceding the report.

Yemen’s cholera situation reflects a broader pattern of disease resurgence tied to the country’s ongoing conflict. In 2024, the WHO identified Yemen as bearing the highest global burden of cholera, while 2017 saw a major outbreak affecting hundreds of thousands and claiming at least 2,000 lives. The current escalation follows a resumption of fighting between Houthi forces and the government in July, ending a four-year period of relative stability.

The WHO has stressed the urgent need for resources and operational access, with Annette Heinzelmann, the agency’s regional emergency director, warning that preventable disease threats compound an already severe humanitarian crisis. The organization has secured only $3.78 million of the $31 million required for a 90-day emergency response focused on disease surveillance, rapid response deployment, treatment capacity strengthening and infection control measures across health facilities and treatment sites.
