SEK Community Food Shop has launched operations at The Pentagon Centre in Chatham, marking the organization’s third location in Kent. The store provides access to budget-friendly groceries with no advance registration required, featuring items such as discounted fruit and vegetable bags priced at £1.
The initiative received initial funding from Medway Council through its Crisis and Resilience Fund. According to Gina English from SEK, the facility extends beyond food provision to include wraparound support services. Customers can access assistance with employment guidance, CV review, interview preparation, financial management advice, and referrals to local organizations. A soundproofed office pod at the rear of the store offers a confidential space for individuals seeking personal advice.
The store’s pricing structure is sustained through a food redistribution model that redirects surplus groceries that would otherwise be discarded. This approach simultaneously addresses food insecurity while reducing environmental waste. SEK’s two existing locations in Ramsgate and Ashford have demonstrated the model’s effectiveness, processing 55,500 transactions across both shops over a twelve-month period and preventing 170 tonnes of food from entering landfills.
Early customers reported satisfaction with available stock and pricing. One shopper noted acquiring a box of 20 samosas for £1.50 and a substantial quantity of chicken for £6, representing savings that would extend meal provisions across multiple days. Medway Council leader Vince Maple characterized the initiative as beneficial for addressing both food waste concerns and affordability challenges for households across income levels.
The Pentagon Centre location operates Monday through Saturday, with hours between 10:00 and 18:00.
