Doctor accused of 1994 Rwanda genocide offences to face trial in UK

A medical doctor identified as Dr Vincent Brown, previously known as Dr Vincent Bajinya, will face trial in the United Kingdom on charges related to his alleged involvement in the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The 65-year-old defendant, residing in north London, is charged with one count of conduct ancillary to genocide and six counts of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity. He represents the first individual prosecuted in the UK for offences connected to the genocide.

A provisional trial date has been established to commence on October 4 2027, with proceedings expected to last between eight and 12 weeks. The defendant appeared before the Old Bailey via video link from Belmarsh prison earlier in the week for a pre-trial hearing. A plea and case management hearing is scheduled for January 15. Brown has indicated through his legal representatives that he intends to enter a not guilty plea to all charges and continues to deny any wrongdoing.

Brown qualified as a medical doctor in Rwanda during the 1980s and subsequently served as head of the country’s Department of Family Health in Kigali, where he lived with his family. British authorities initiated a seven-year investigation into his alleged involvement in killings that allegedly occurred between April 6 and 13 1994, during the early stages of the genocide. The prosecution contends that he was party to six murders during this period.

The 1994 Rwanda genocide resulted in the deaths of an estimated 800,000 individuals, predominantly Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus, over a 100-day span. Prosecutors have characterized the events as representing “the most devastating wave of mass killing in modern history.” The court was informed that a £100,000 bail condition imposed earlier in October had not yet been satisfied at the time of the pre-trial hearing.
