MyMama Entertainment has announced a new film project titled “Ibicaba: O Paraíso Prometido” directed by Andrea Štaka, a Golden Leopard winner at the Locarno Film Festival. The production marks a co-venture between the Brazilian company, Switzerland’s Cinédokké Sagl, and Brazil’s MMM Carioca. The cast includes Ella Rumpf, Júlio Andrade, and Ana Flávia Cavalcanti in leading roles.
The film is based on Eveline Hasler’s novel “Ibicaba: O Paraíso nas Cabeças” and draws from actual historical events centered on a rural farm in São Paulo state. Production is scheduled to take place next year in Switzerland and Cordeirópolis, located in central São Paulo. The narrative is set in 1855 and examines the experiences of a working-class Swiss woman who immigrates to Brazil seeking opportunity but encounters systems of exploitation and debt within a slavery-based society. Her story intersects with that of Inocência, an enslaved Black woman with knowledge of healing practices and strategies of resistance.
Štaka’s connection to the source material originates in her adolescence when she first encountered Hasler’s novel. The director has undertaken Portuguese language study to facilitate direct communication with cast and crew members and to develop deeper understanding of the characters’ experiences. Historical consultation on the project comes from Caróu Oliveira, a historian specializing in slavery studies and the lives of 19th-century Black women. The film previously received development support through a co-production award at the Berlinale Co-Production Market.
MyMama Entertainment CEO Mayra Faour Auad characterized the company as an international production entity that partners with auteur directors regardless of nationality and secures financing from multiple regions including Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. Faour Auad emphasized the strategic value of international productions filming in Brazil, citing the country’s diverse locations, experienced technical crews, and renowned department heads in cinematography, production design, and costume work.
The production company is simultaneously managing other projects in development and post-production phases, including João Paulo Miranda Maria’s “I Don’t Even Know Who I Was” and Pia Marais’s “Whyte Lies.”
