Elon Musk invests about $1 billion in Skydance

Elon Musk has committed roughly $1 billion in equity investment to Skydance, according to sources familiar with the transaction. The funding comes as the entertainment company undertakes significant cost consolidation efforts following Paramount’s completion of its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on Oct. 6.

Skydance is now tasked with integrating two major film studios, two streaming platforms in Paramount+ and HBO Max, multiple television networks, and two news divisions. Co-CEOs David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz are leading the merger and consolidation process. The company has publicly stated expectations to achieve $6 billion in cost reductions over a three-year period, though it carries a substantial debt load approaching $80 billion.

Musk’s investment represents part of a broader capital-raising initiative by Skydance to secure additional equity financing. Representatives from both Musk and Skydance declined to provide immediate comment on the transaction. Semafor initially reported the investment details earlier in the week.

The investment reflects existing business relationships between Musk and the Ellison family. Larry Ellison, Skydance co-CEO David Ellison’s father and Oracle co-founder, previously invested $1 billion in Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, now operating as X. Ellison has also maintained historical investments in Tesla and previously served on the company’s board. Additionally, Larry Ellison personally guaranteed more than $40 billion in equity financing commitments related to Paramount’s acquisition offer for Warner Bros. Discovery.
