Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has terminated 15 staff members for inappropriately accessing patient medical records belonging to victims of a June 2023 attack in the city. The incident involved three fatalities: students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19 years old, and Ian Coates, a 65-year-old caretaker. Three additional individuals were injured in the attack.
Beyond the terminations, the trust has issued 15 final written warnings and two first written warnings as part of its disciplinary process. The investigation has encompassed doctors, nurses, registered healthcare professionals, and other staff members. Families of the victims were notified of the latest developments this week.
Dr Manjeet Shehmar, medical director at the trust, stated there is no justification for accessing patient records without legitimate clinical purposes and emphasized the organization’s commitment to investigating and taking action against such breaches. He expressed remorse that the victims’ families experienced further harm through the inappropriate access to their records.
The matter comes as NHS England has launched a formal crackdown on record access violations. In May, the trust had previously announced the dismissal of 11 staff members for illegal access to the same victims’ records. Sir Jim Mackey, head of NHS England, announced that staff suspected of inappropriately accessing medical records will face immediate suspension and loss of computer system access. Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere, including at University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, where dozens of staff accessed records from 2024 Southport attack victims, and at a Cambridgeshire hospital where approximately 40 staff members viewed records of a young child.
Valdo Calocane received an indefinite hospital order in January 2024 after admitting to manslaughter by diminished responsibility and attempted murder. The trust indicated it is implementing new detection systems and enhanced staff education to prevent future data breaches.
