The beloved claymation character Gromit is set to find his voice through a newly announced audiobook edition of an autobiography, with actor Martin Freeman providing the narration. The dog has been a central figure in the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit franchise since its inception, appearing in films such as The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave, and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, but has never spoken on screen during that time.
Creator Nick Park explained the reasoning behind casting Freeman, noting that selecting a voice for such a recognizable character presented a unique challenge. Park described the decision-making process and emphasized that Freeman would not adopt an exaggerated comedic voice for the character. Instead, Freeman will deliver Gromit’s inner thoughts and personal reflections as written in the autobiography, bringing his characteristic thoughtfulness and wit to the narration.
Freeman’s casting draws on his experience playing supporting roles, most notably his acclaimed work as Dr. John Watson opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the television series Sherlock, a role that earned him multiple awards. Park indicated this background makes Freeman well-suited to portray Gromit, given the character’s long history of dealing with the chaotic behavior of his owner Wallace.
The autobiography, titled Grand: The Autobiography of Gromit as told to Nick Park, is scheduled for publication on 22 October. Beyond the book release, the franchise is expanding with Larger Than Life, an immersive experience opening on 14 October at the Lightroom in King’s Cross, London, which will feature behind-the-scenes content projected across four large walls.
