Longbow, a British electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced intentions to commence production of its limited-edition Speedster model at Mira Tech Park in Nuneaton next year. The hand-built sports car carries a price tag of approximately £85,000 and already has a substantial international waiting list of prospective purchasers.
The project has received £3 million in funding from the government’s West Midlands Supplier Readiness and Transformation fund, a £50 million initiative designed to support the UK’s shift toward electric vehicle manufacturing. West Midlands mayor Richard Parker, who championed the investment, stated that the venture is expected to generate more than 200 skilled employment positions. Parker noted the region’s 130-year history of automotive manufacturing as a key advantage for the new initiative.
Longbow’s co-chief executive Daniel Davey emphasized the strategic importance of the Warwickshire location, highlighting the region’s specialized supply chain, engineering talent, and manufacturing expertise. He stated that the vehicle’s design benefits from UK-based components and skilled labor, with designers located in nearby Leamington Spa and engineers distributed across the West Midlands and beyond. Davey indicated that the company requires low-volume, high-quality, lightweight components that are best sourced and manufactured locally.
The company plans to follow the Speedster’s production with its Roadster model and aims to manufacture more than 10,000 vehicles annually. Longbow indicated it would match-fund the government investment. Academic analysis from Professor David Bailey noted the initiative demonstrates British research and development capabilities, though he suggested broader support for the automotive sector would be necessary to sustain regional growth in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.
