Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth established “Project Meridian,” a Pentagon initiative focused on the future of warfare, with leadership from Emil Michael, a former Uber executive and the Department of Defense’s artificial intelligence official. The project also includes advisory roles for tech billionaire Elon Musk, virtual reality entrepreneur Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
Musk has emerged as one of the most significant financial backers of Republican political efforts. He spent over a quarter of a billion dollars supporting President Trump’s 2024 campaign. His political action committee, America Pac, has remained active in subsequent races, spending $3.4 million against Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Senate race and allocating $6.4 million to oppose Democrat James Talarico in the Texas Senate race while contributing $1 million to support Trump-endorsed candidate Ken Paxton. Musk’s SpaceX has served as a major contractor for U.S. space programs since 2018 and has become instrumental in Trump’s Golden Dome ballistic missile defense initiative, estimated to potentially cost up to $1.2 trillion.
Luckey founded Anduril, a defense contracting company that has secured significant federal contracts. He has become a prominent fundraiser for Republican candidates on the West Coast, organizing and co-hosting political fundraising events for numerous GOP figures, including Trump, Ken Calvert, Rick Scott, Mehmet Oz, and Ted Cruz. Luckey has publicly articulated views on future warfare, stating earlier this year that he believes conflict in the second half of the century will involve “subterranean” combat using vehicles capable of moving through the earth’s crust similarly to submarines moving through water. His company claims to possess working prototypes of such systems.
Brendan Glavin of Open Secrets, which monitors campaign spending, noted that while Pentagon advisory positions held by industry figures are not unprecedented, the scale of financial support Musk and Luckey have provided to the Republican Party distinguishes the current arrangement. The Pentagon did not provide immediate comment on the initiative.
