Marriott International is pursuing expansion opportunities in the Maldives by targeting Indian travelers, a market segment that has become increasingly important following shifts in visitor patterns earlier this year.
When geopolitical tensions emerged in March, the Maldives experienced a notable decline in arrivals as travelers from Europe and North America reduced visits through Gulf connection hubs. According to Silvio Rosenberger, Marriott’s market vice president for the Maldives, the destination has recovered to near-normal visitor volumes, though the composition of arriving guests has shifted significantly toward Asian markets.
India represents a growing opportunity within this realigned tourism landscape. The country currently ranks among the Maldives’ top 10 source markets and has shown upward trajectory. Indian visitor numbers remained relatively unchanged during 2025, when the country ranked sixth with 112,229 arrivals. Early figures through August of this year indicated continued momentum, with 76,000 arrivals recorded during that period.
Marriott is responding to this demand through property development initiatives. The company plans to open additional resorts in the Maldives, including the Bulgari Resort, scheduled to launch next year. The strategic focus involves converting traditional honeymoon destination perception into repeat visitation patterns, encouraging Indian travelers to return for family vacations, celebrations, and extended weekends rather than limiting visits to wedding-related occasions.
This repositioning reflects broader hospitality industry adaptation to changing travel patterns and the recognition that recovering markets present opportunities to cultivate relationships with emerging source countries.
