How Marriott Is Investing in the Maldives to Win Indian Travelers

Marriott International is pursuing growth opportunities in the Maldives by targeting Indian travelers as a key demographic for the destination. The hospitality company sees potential beyond honeymoon trips, aiming to attract Indian visitors for family vacations, birthday celebrations, and long weekend getaways.

The Maldives experienced a notable decline in arrivals when a Middle East crisis began earlier this year, with European and American travelers avoiding the region due to disruptions at Gulf transit hubs. However, Marriott reports that overall arrival numbers have largely recovered, though the geographic composition of visitors has shifted significantly. India has emerged as a crucial replacement market during this period of transition.

According to Silvio Rosenberger, Marriott’s market vice president for the Maldives and Asia Pacific operations vice president, India ranks among the destination’s top 10 source markets and is experiencing upward momentum. Indian arrivals remained relatively stagnant in 2025, when the country ranked sixth with 112,229 visitors. By August of this year, Indian arrivals had already reached 76,000, indicating accelerating growth.

To support this expansion strategy, Marriott is increasing its physical presence in the archipelago through new property openings, including the anticipated debut of Bulgari Resort next year. The company’s investment signals confidence in the long-term potential of the Indian leisure travel market to the Maldives, positioning the chain to capture a larger share of this growing segment.
