Pat McAfee has appeared in his first film role in The Mosquito Bowl, a sports war drama directed by Peter Berg. The movie follows the true story of four college football players who enlist in the Marines following Pearl Harbor and play a historical football game before deploying. McAfee portrays a drill instructor in the film, which also stars Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgard, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis.
McAfee described how the casting opportunity arose after Timothée Chalamet’s appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay in 2024 brought Hollywood attention to his on-air presence during a period when the film was actively casting. He recalled receiving an offer shortly thereafter and spending a week training at Marine Corps recruit training in Parris Island, South Carolina to prepare for the role. McAfee stated he had not previously considered acting but sought guidance from established actors to approach the role professionally.
Director Berg revealed that McAfee received acting coaching from Bradley Cooper and sought advice from Tom Cruise while preparing for the part. Ari Emanuel, whose company TKO owns WWE where McAfee occasionally appears, encouraged him to pursue acting opportunities. Berg emphasized McAfee’s commitment to the project despite his existing ESPN responsibilities, noting his earnest approach to learning the craft.
The film reunites Berg with author Buzz Bissinger, who adapted his 2022 book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. The two are cousins who previously collaborated on the adaptation of Bissinger’s Friday Night Lights. Cast member Galitzine noted the project’s distinctive elements within the war film genre, while Nicholson discussed the camaraderie developed among the ensemble during production.
The Mosquito Bowl releases in theaters Oct. 30 and begins streaming on Netflix on Nov. 25.
