The 12th edition of Impulso Morelia, the works-in-progress industry section of the Morelia Film Festival, concluded with ‘Galerna’ by Mexican filmmaker Tatiana Huezo claiming the festival’s top prize. The José María Riba Award, presented by Cinépolis Distribution and Profest 2026, came with funding valued at 250,000 pesos toward post-production needs and promotional activities.
‘Galerna’ marks Huezo’s second fiction feature following ‘Prayers for the Stolen.’ The director previously garnered critical recognition for her documentary work, including ‘Tempestad’ and ‘The Tiniest Place,’ both produced by Pimienta Films. The film itself follows two casting directors traveling through remote Mexican locations while searching for natural actors for a science fiction production, an experience that evolves into an examination of their personal anxieties and assumptions. The project recently received the Egeda Platino Industria Award at the San Sebastian Festival’s WIP Latin America competition.
‘Homeboys,’ a documentary by Alonso Garibay and Alejandro Bernal, emerged as another significant winner with a Special Mention designation. The film documents Roberto Hernández, known as ‘Mr. Lucky,’ who was deported to a country unfamiliar to him and subsequently established a shelter for individuals facing comparable circumstances. ‘Homeboys’ also secured the inaugural Eugenio Polgovsky Award, valued at 100,000 pesos, created to honor the late filmmaker.
Additional prizes were distributed among competing projects. Caffeine post-production house selected three films—’Galerna,’ ‘All the Water in the World,’ and ‘Homeboys’—to receive combined in-kind services valued at over 387,000 pesos. The Splendor Omnia Studios Award went to documentaries ‘Raká’ and ‘Katechon,’ providing two years of facility access in Tepoztlán, Morelos for sound design and color grading work respectively.
International jurors evaluated the competing projects, with panel member Mauricio Durán Ortega noting that this year’s decision regarding the top award was unanimous, with ‘Galerna’ standing apart sufficiently to require no further deliberation.
