Ernie Johnson revealed this week that he is concluding his tenure as host of Inside the NBA, the long-running NBA highlights and analysis program. Johnson made the announcement through a video posted on social media, indicating that the ongoing season represents his final year in the role after more than three decades with the show.
Johnson first joined Inside the NBA during its second season in 1990 and has remained as host throughout its entire run since then. The program has featured analysts Kenny Smith since 1998, Charles Barkley since 2000, and Shaquille O’Neal since 2011. In his video statement, Johnson described the position as a “get to” job and explained that he made the decision independently. He noted that while he continues to take pride in his preparation, he wanted to depart while the role remains a source of joy rather than becoming a challenge.
Johnson cited recent health considerations as a contributing factor to his decision. The 70-year-old host underwent heart bypass surgery in 2025 but reported feeling in good health and not operating under medical restrictions. He indicated a desire to dedicate more time to his family, which includes five grandchildren. Notably, analyst Charles Barkley previously indicated in September that he also plans to retire from the program after the current season.
Inside the NBA transitioned to new distribution arrangements following changes in NBA broadcast rights. The program aired on TNT from 1989 through 2025 but moved to ESPN coverage after the 2024-25 season concluded. TNT Sports continues producing the show and licenses it to ESPN for select NBA broadcasts. The program has accumulated over 20 Sports Emmy Awards throughout its history, with Johnson receiving recognition as best studio host at this year’s ceremony.
Johnson will maintain other professional commitments beyond Inside the NBA, including involvement with NCAA basketball coverage on TNT and his production company, 32 Bow Ties.
