Intel says it’s selling every affordable laptop chip it can make

Intel reported robust demand for its Wildcat Lake processor line during its latest earnings presentation, with Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner stating the budget-oriented chips are completely sold out. Chief Executive Lip-Bu Tan noted that demand is outpacing the company’s production capacity for these cost-optimized processors.

The Wildcat Lake chips have emerged as a key component in affordable laptop offerings as component shortages have elevated PC pricing across the market. These processors are being incorporated into new lower-cost Windows laptops that compete with similarly priced offerings in the premium segment. While such systems feature competitive pricing at entry levels, they typically include limited RAM configurations that can present operational challenges for Windows-based systems.

The broader computing market continues to face significant supply constraints driven by heightened demand for AI-related computing resources. Zinsner indicated the company holds a pessimistic outlook regarding memory availability, stating that RAM shortages are not expected to ease in the immediate future. He projected that meaningful improvements in memory supply would not occur in the next year, with potential relief possibly arriving in 2028, though uncertainties remain. This assessment is less optimistic than projections from competitor SK Hynix, which has suggested the RAM shortage could persist through 2030.

Despite acknowledging a slowdown in personal computer demand, Intel’s leadership expressed confidence in the sector’s trajectory. Tan indicated the company believes the PC market will experience renewed growth despite current supply chain difficulties driven by the computing industry’s pivot toward artificial intelligence infrastructure.
