Isle of Man doctors vote to take strike action in row over pay

Medical professionals on the Isle of Man have approved strike action following a dispute centered on compensation levels. The British Medical Association reported that 104 of 168 eligible members participated in the ballot, with 95% voting to support industrial action.

The union highlighted that physicians have experienced a real terms pay reduction of 29% since 2008, despite recent pay increases implemented through an earlier agreement. That prior accord, finalized in January 2025, included an 8% pay uplift for the initial year, a 6% increase from April 2024, and an additional 2% raise from February of last year. The BMA indicated that even with these raises, doctors’ purchasing power remains substantially lower than it was in 2008.

Manx Care, the healthcare provider, stated it remains optimistic that a revised pay proposal presented on 18 June will be accepted by the medical staff. A ballot on the improved offer is scheduled to conclude later this week. The organization has not announced a specific date for any potential strike action.

Dr. Prakash Thiagarajan, chair of the Isle of Man Medical Society, characterized the vote as sending a forceful signal that the existing circumstances are unsustainable. Medical professionals, he noted, are experiencing feelings of underappreciation and growing anxiety regarding the long-term viability of medical careers on the island. BMA deputy chair of council Dr. Emma Runswick stated that the strike vote demonstrates physicians’ commitment to securing equitable compensation, recognition of their professional abilities, and ensuring adequate medical staffing sustainability.

The strike ballot outcome coincides with leadership transitions at Manx Care, with chief executive Teresa Cope departing and board chair Wendy Reid announcing she will step down during the summer.
