J. Todd Anderson, a storyboard artist with an extensive filmography spanning several decades, passed away on Thursday at a hospital in Orange County, California. He was 67 and had been battling cancer for an extended period.

Anderson was born John Todd Anderson in Springfield, Ohio, and began his career in Hollywood during the late 1980s. His first storyboard work was on 1987’s Raising Arizona, which marked the beginning of a prolific partnership with filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen. He subsequently worked on every subsequent Coen Brothers project, contributing to films such as Miller’s Crossing, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, The Ladykillers, True Grit, Hail, Caesar!, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. More recently, he storyboarded Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don’t!, as well as Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Beyond his work with the Coens, Anderson collaborated with numerous other prominent directors and performers. His credits included George Clooney’s Leatherheads, Drew Barrymore’s Whip It, David Lowery’s The Old Man & the Gun, and three films directed by Shane Black: The Nice Guys, The Predator, and Play Dirty. His broader storyboard portfolio encompassed films ranging from Twister to Warcraft to Fool’s Paradise.

In addition to storyboarding, Anderson directed two feature films: The Naked Man, which he co-wrote with Ethan Coen, and My Mummy. He also made occasional onscreen appearances in several productions, including Fargo, Leatherheads, The Nice Guys, and American Violence.

Anderson is survived by his mother, Donna Lou, his sister Kimberly, and his niece Haley.
