Janet Davies obituary

Janet Davies, who has died at age 89, spent most of her adult life engaged in international development work, ecumenical initiatives, and social justice advocacy.

From 1968 to 1986, Davies worked for Christian Aid in Merseyside and the north-west, eventually becoming regional organiser. Based in Liverpool, she collaborated with church leaders to build cross-denominational grassroots alliances and coordinate Christian Aid Week activities. Her efforts in establishing the Merseyside Churches Ecumenical Council contributed to foundations for broader interfaith partnerships in the region.

Davies traveled extensively on behalf of Christian Aid, visiting sites of poverty and conflict that shaped her spiritual perspective. She visited Calcutta in 1975, South Africa during the apartheid era in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the Middle East beginning in 1982. She later studied theology at Birmingham University, earning a certificate in 1994. She contributed to a 2000 publication documenting Western Christian perspectives on the Holy Land, focusing on peace and justice concerns in that region.

In her later career, Davies became active in Middle East peace advocacy, leading programmes for USPG and the United Reformed Church during the 1980s and 1990s. After retiring, she established Sabeel-Kairos UK, a charitable organization dedicated to solidarity with the Palestinian Christian community. She was known as a compelling public speaker and accomplished musician who performed as a pianist and choral singer.

Davies is survived by her brother and nine nieces and nephews. Her husband, Alan Davies, whom she married in 1968, predeceased her. An older brother, Chris, also preceded her in death.
