Joanna Hogg, a prominent British filmmaker known for works including “The Souvenir” and “The Eternal Daughter,” has been appointed to preside over the main competition jury at El Gouna Film Festival. The festival will take place October 15-23 at a Red Sea resort location approximately 250 miles south of Cairo. In addition to her jury duties, Hogg is scheduled to lead a masterclass session titled “Life Into Film” during the festival.
Hogg will share jury responsibilities with four other international cinema professionals. These include Egyptian actress Nahed El Sebaie, known for “19 B”; composer Khaled Hammad, whose three-decade career includes work on films such as “The Yacoubian Building” and “The Inevitable Journey to Find a Wedding Dress”; Iraqi-Kurdish filmmaker Shawkat Amin Korki, whose credits include “Memories on Stone” and “The Exam”; and Turkish filmmaker Yeşim Ustaoğlu, whose recent work “What Remains” premiered at San Sebastian.
The festival also confirmed composition of additional jury panels for its ninth edition. Swiss-Iraqi filmmaker and producer Samir will head the documentary and environmental film juries, overseeing both standard documentary competition awards and the festival’s “Green Star” prize. His panel includes Afghanistan-born, Netherlands-based filmmaker Aboozar Amini; Belgian producer Julie Frères; Zurich Film Festival director Reta Guetg; and Lebanese film editor Gladys Joujou.
The short films competition jury comprises Saudi director Meshal AlJaser, Tunisian director Amel Guellaty, and Greek actor-director Christos Passalis, who appeared in “Dogtooth” and the Sundance Audience Award-winning film “Hold Onto Me.”
