Caroline Kepnes, the author behind the “You” novel series that became a Netflix phenomenon, is making her directorial debut with a digital series project titled “The Attentionist.”
The production brings together an ensemble cast featuring Katherine Mallen Kupferer and Audrey Grace Marshall as sisters Maeve and Reg, whose relationship is described as “gloriously messy.” The two actors recently appeared together in “Mouse,” which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and featured Sophie Okonedo and David Hyde Pierce. Dean Norris, recognized for his role in “Breaking Bad,” and Jordan Ladd, known for her work in horror cinema, round out the principal cast as the sisters’ parents. Norris plays a character described as “Tony Soprano minus the Mafia,” while Ladd portrays an attractive mother unaware of her daughters’ deteriorating circumstances.
Set in a ’90s Cape Cod neighborhood inhabited by wealthy coastal families and seasonal visitors, the narrative follows adolescent Maeve and her older sister Reg as they initiate a covert phone romance with a boy affiliated with the local boat club. The encounter promises entry into Cape Cod’s exclusive social circles, but the mysterious voice takes a sinister turn, with Maeve continuing the contact despite the escalating darkness. The situation subsequently draws the entire family into a concealed menace.
Kepnes wrote and directs the project, which combines elements of family comedy with psychological thriller conventions. Mark Roberts, known for producing “Meet Me Next Christmas,” and Lorena David, a producer on “Strangers with Candy,” serve as producers. The series will film on location in Cape Cod, Kepnes’ hometown, and is slated for release on YouTube. A specific release date has not been announced.
