Kris Bowers, an Academy Award-winning composer, has been assigned to compose the original score for Disney’s forthcoming animated film “Hexed.” The feature stars Hailee Steinfeld, Rashida Jones, Jodie Foster, and Walton Goggins in a magical coming-of-age narrative centered on a teenage girl who uncovers secret magical powers that propel her into a hidden realm populated by witches.
Bowers described his compositional approach as one rooted in exploration and experimentation. Drawing inspiration from the film’s protagonist and her aspirations of flight—both literal and figurative—he incorporated unconventional instruments and sound sources, including bird call whistles, wind wands, nose flutes, bottles, kazoos, air sirens, and transformed recordings of actual birds. The resulting score blends orchestral elements with an effects-laden chamber woodwind ensemble, synthesizers, and natural sound textures that oscillate between acoustic and electronic qualities.
The composer emphasized that the score prioritizes the emotional core of the narrative, which centers on the relationship between mother and daughter. He aimed to balance intimacy with the sense of wonder and adventure characteristic of the magical world depicted in the film. The directors are Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand, with Roy Conli and Yvett Merino serving as producers. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on Nov. 25.
Beyond this project, Bowers is also engaged in other scoring work, having completed the music for Netflix’s animated film “Steps” and the upcoming Paramount/Skydance sports drama “Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story,” which will premiere on Dec. 25. He is additionally collaborating with filmmaker Ben Proudfoot on a documentary titled “The Eyes Of Ghana” from Breakwater Studios.
