Paloma Negra, a major Mexican production company founded by producer Cristina Velasco and directors Rigoberto Perezcano and Jorge Hernandez Aldana, has joined Michael Rowe’s drama ‘Last Weekend’ as a producing partner. The film finished principal photography on October 15.
The narrative centers on Adrian, an undocumented Mexican migrant worker living in San Diego who reunites with his six-year-old daughter following a year of legal custody disputes. The story examines his efforts to rebuild their relationship and reconnect her with her cultural heritage while navigating government policies affecting undocumented migrants. Rowe, an Australian filmmaker based in Mexico City, also wrote the screenplay.
Production combined interior scenes shot on a Mexico City soundstage with location shooting in San Ysidro and Barrio Logan, residential areas south of San Diego where migrant workers live. The filmmaking occurred during a period of heightened immigration enforcement actions, requiring careful coordination despite secured permits. Rowe credited support from local migrant organizations for their cooperation throughout the shoot.
The cast features Fernando Cuatle in the lead role, alongside newcomer Rose Peraza Benítez and supporting actors Alejandra Cosío and Víctor Oliveira. Rowe employed a minimal crew and completed the entire 17-day shoot on a tight schedule. The film was produced by Rowe and Mariana Castro, whose previous credits include work on ‘The Dreams We Share’ and ‘Binniza, the Beings of the Cloud.’ Post-production editing has begun, though Rowe indicated the production is seeking additional financing partners to complete the process.
