“Less Red Carpet, More Love of Cinema”: The Warsaw Int’l Film Festival Wants to Be a Destination for Discovery

The Warsaw International Film Festival held its 42nd edition this year, presenting 190 films with 132 features across its programming. The festival, which opened on October 9 with Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut, concluded on October 19. The program included 102 world, international, or regional premieres, providing audiences with substantial opportunities to discover emerging and established work from global filmmakers.

The festival’s industry component, Warsaw Industry Days, expanded its scope and activity. According to Eliza Subotowicz, head of Industry Days, the initiative received twice as many submissions to the Warsaw Co-Production Forum compared to the previous year. The program established new partnerships, including collaboration with the Polish Producers Alliance, and drew increased participation from international industry professionals. Future plans include broadening the co-production forum to encompass projects across Europe and potentially beyond.

Festival director Joanna Szymańska-Szcześniak and program director Bartek Pulcyn outlined the institution’s strategic direction. Szymańska-Szcześniak emphasized strengthening international partnerships and positioning Warsaw as an increasingly attractive destination for filmmakers, producers, and audiences. She noted the festival receives over 4,000 submissions annually and prioritized making programming accessible to diverse audiences beyond traditional film professionals.

Pulcyn highlighted the festival’s role as a platform for discovery, particularly through dedicated sections for first and second features and a strong short film competition with Oscar-qualifying awards. The festival’s autumn timing was identified as advantageous, allowing it to accommodate films that other major festivals cannot program. Notable world premieres included works by Kristijonas Vildžiūnas, Keisuke Yoshida, and Felix Hassenfratz, among others.
