'Life-saving' Frome Birth Talk charity for mums may stop support

Frome Birth Talk, a charity offering counselling services to new mothers, has issued an urgent appeal for funding to continue operations. The organization provided support to more than 155 mothers during the current year but warns it will need to restrict access to services unless it can raise £10,000 by Sunday.

According to charity director Suzy Cristinacce, approximately 50% of the organization’s funding comes from grants, but recent applications have not resulted in successful funding despite receiving positive feedback. Cristinacce expressed concern that while the need for mental health support among new mothers continues to grow, available funding sources are diminishing. The charity has established a crowdfunding campaign with a deadline matching its funding goal.

The Royal College of Midwives reports that approximately one in four new mothers experience mental health difficulties following childbirth. One mother who received support from the charity, Sarah N’Guio, credited the organization with helping her recovery after experiencing postpartum depression and other mental health challenges following a traumatic birth.

A spokesperson for the Royal United Hospitals Bath indicated that alternative mental health support remains available to women in the area, including NHS pathways that provide referrals to the hospital’s perinatal mental health team. NHS England has been contacted for comment on the funding situation affecting the charity sector’s role in supporting postpartum mental health services.
