Lucca Comics and Games is preparing its 60th edition in the Tuscan town of Lucca, scheduled to take place Oct. 28-Nov. 1. Director Emanuele Vietina outlined plans for the event, which regularly attracts more than 200,000 daily visitors to the medieval town. The festival will showcase a broad range of entertainment properties spanning film, television, animation, and video games.
Film and television highlights include a preview of Season 3 of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” with cast members in attendance. Aardman Animations founder Peter Lord and director Peter Walker will appear for the Italian premiere of “Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.” Japanese filmmaker Kore-eda Hirokazu will participate in programming centered on the film adaptation of “Look Back,” a manga work by Fujimoto Tatsuki. A special fan screening of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” is also planned, and Warner Bros. will operate an immersive “Harry Potter” pavilion.
To commemorate the anniversary, Lucca will debut “Lucca Legacy: A Comics and Games Story,” an exhibition housed in the 14th century Palazzo Guinigi. The exhibition will explore the event’s historical significance and its connections to major figures in comic book history including Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
The video game sector features substantial representation, with Polish developer CD Projekt Red showcasing “Cyberpunk 2077” and the “Cyberpunk Edgerunners” animated series, along with “The Witcher” franchise. Legendary game directors Hideki Kamiya and Yoshinori Kitase will appear for programming related to their work. The creators of “Alien: Isolation 2” are also scheduled to participate. Animation properties including “Adventure Time” and the “Edgerunners” series will receive dedicated programming and creator appearances.
Vietina emphasized that the event’s programming reflects a specific focus on crossovers between different entertainment mediums, particularly between cinema and video games, while maintaining connections to literary sources and classical storytelling traditions.
