Lululemon poaches Athleta CEO as new chief product officer

Lululemon announced the appointment of Maggie Gauger as president and chief product officer, marking a newly created executive position at the athleisure retailer. Gauger, who previously served as CEO of Athleta, joins from that role after spending approximately one year at the company following her previous tenure at Nike.

In conjunction with Gauger’s hire, Lululemon also promoted Joseph Godsey to the position of chief operating officer. The leadership restructuring includes the departure of two current executives: Nikki Neuburger, who serves as chief brand and product activation officer, and Ted Dagnese, the chief supply chain officer, will both leave the company in November to pursue other opportunities.

Lululemon CEO Heidi O’Neill framed the executive changes as part of establishing a more coordinated senior management team. O’Neill stated the restructuring aims to prioritize product, design, and innovation in the company’s operations, with emphasis on developing a stronger product pipeline and improving the customer experience across all channels.

Athleta’s parent company Gap confirmed Gauger’s departure and announced that Erika Everett, the brand’s chief marketing officer, will serve in an interim capacity overseeing the CEO role. Gap indicated the leadership transition aligns with efforts to position Athleta for sustained growth and strengthen customer relationships.

Beyond the announced appointments, Lululemon indicated it is actively recruiting for additional senior positions, including a chief brand officer, chief communications officer, and chief technology officer. The executive moves follow O’Neill’s appointment as CEO last month during a period when the company faced extended sales challenges and internal corporate governance disputes.
