Ryan Roslansky has announced his resignation from Microsoft, concluding a tenure of nearly 18 years with the company and its predecessor LinkedIn. Until recently serving as LinkedIn CEO, Roslansky was promoted to lead Microsoft’s Office division last year and assumed control of the Teams product earlier this year. His departure follows a period of significant organizational changes within Microsoft’s productivity software division.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella praised Roslansky’s contributions in an internal communication, highlighting the progress made over the past year in integrating product, engineering, and design efforts across Office and Teams. This transition comes approximately one week after Microsoft unveiled its new Copilot offering, which the company is marketing as “the OS for work.” Notably, Roslansky had expressed concerns in recent weeks about the risks of AI-generated content, cautioning against workflows that could result in “a very expensive way to avoid writing and reading in an ocean of sameness.”
Roslansky’s decision to depart stems from personal circumstances rather than disagreement with company direction. In his departure memo to staff, he explained that maintaining his effectiveness in leading the next phase of the company’s work would require relocating full-time to Redmond, Washington. However, he determined that his family’s quality of life and established community ties in the Bay Area made such a move inadvisable at this stage of his life.
Microsoft has reorganized leadership responsibilities in response to the departure. Charles Lamanna will now oversee the Office and Teams divisions as part of the broader Copilot, Agents, and Platform organization. Additionally, chief design officer Jon Friedman will report to Jacob Andreou, the Copilot chief. This represents the second significant restructuring of the Office teams this year, following the earlier retirement of Rajesh Jha. Dan Shapero continues in his role as LinkedIn CEO, reporting directly to Nadella.
