A new edition of the Reputation Risk Index, released on Tuesday, identifies misuse of artificial intelligence as the primary threat to corporate reputations among surveyed public affairs leaders. The index, which tracks evolving risks to brand standing, found that AI-related concerns now outrank other significant challenges including accusations involving child safety and issues stemming from geopolitical conflicts.
The survey was conducted among former heads of state, government ministers, and senior executives from more than 20 countries across five continents who have demonstrated expertise in crisis response. Respondents acknowledged AI’s potential for generating organizational efficiency while simultaneously expressing concerns about safety issues, data breaches, fraud, privacy violations, workforce disruptions, and litigation related to AI product harms.
The Global Situation Room, the public affairs firm that created the index, has issued an advisory recommending that business leaders take immediate action to protect their brands from AI-related reputational damage. Recommended mitigation strategies include reducing or eliminating AI content use and returning to human-centered customer service approaches. The advisory reflects what council chair Isabel Casillas Guzman characterized as a critical moment when rapid AI deployment has coincided with declining public confidence in the technology.
The latest index results represent a notable shift in priorities compared to the previous edition released in July, which identified supply chain disruptions and divisive political stances as leading concerns. According to Guzman, anxieties around geopolitical conflict have diminished as the situation has continued, allowing the issue to fall outside the top tier of reputational risks despite remaining unresolved. Meanwhile, other longstanding concerns including unethical business conduct and poor strategic decisions rounded out the top five reputational threats.
