MNEK cancels tour over lack of ticket sales and production costs

MNEK announced the cancellation of his upcoming tour scheduled to begin next month in support of his album Bulldozer!!. The Grammy-nominated artist, whose real name is Uzoechi Emenike, stated that inadequate ticket sales and high production expenses made it impossible to execute the tour to his desired quality standards. He expressed that he had no interest in proceeding with performances unless he could deliver a show meeting his expectations.

The 31-year-old joins a broader cohort of entertainers who have recently cancelled or significantly scaled back tour plans due to similar financial pressures. Earlier this year, The Pussycat Dolls cancelled almost their entire US reunion tour leg following poor ticket sales. Industry professionals attribute these cancellations to what has been termed a “cost of touring crisis,” with elevated expenses making it increasingly difficult for artists to achieve financial viability through live performances. David Rowntree, chair of the Featured Artists Coalition and drummer for Blur, stated earlier this year that making touring pay for itself had become “virtually impossible now.”

Booking agent and promoter Joe Booley noted that the live music industry has undergone significant changes since the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly regarding consumer spending patterns. He identified poor ticket sales as a widespread challenge many artists currently face. Alternative strategies some acts are employing include downsizing to smaller venues, reducing tour lengths, and postponing scheduled shows to mitigate financial risk. MNEK’s cancelled tour was to feature UK and European dates with ticket prices beginning around £30.

MNEK assured ticket purchasers that refunds would be processed and indicated his intention to reschedule the tour when circumstances permit him to deliver a show he believes fans deserve. The artist received messages of support from collaborators and industry peers, including pop artist Zara Larsson and Little Mix member Leigh-Anne Pinnock.
