The White House announced that more than 20 million Medicare beneficiaries will receive a one-time $90 payment from the federal government to help offset Medicare Part B premiums. President Trump indicated the payments would begin immediately. Of Medicare Part B’s approximately 62.9 million total enrollees, roughly 20.8 million will qualify for the direct payments.
Most eligible seniors are expected to receive the $90 payment via direct deposit on or around Oct. 8, according to information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Beneficiaries without direct deposit set up will receive checks sent to their mailing address on file with Medicare later in October. However, the payment represents a modest offset against the 2026 standard Medicare Part B premium of $202.90 per month, which totals approximately $2,434.80 annually.
Eligibility excludes several categories of Medicare beneficiaries. Those receiving premium assistance through Medicaid are ineligible, as are individuals who pay income-related monthly adjustment amounts—additional surcharges applied to beneficiaries with incomes exceeding certain thresholds. Beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans and those not residing in the United States also do not qualify for the payments.
The $90 payments will be funded through unutilized allocations from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which Congress has authorized with $2 billion for improvements to Medicare’s fee-for-service program. To verify eligibility, beneficiaries can contact Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. Beginning on Oct. 15, beneficiaries may check payment status by calling the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.
Looking ahead, the standard Medicare Part B premium for 2027 is estimated to increase to $209.50 monthly, representing a $6.60 monthly increase or $79.20 annually. The Social Security Administration is scheduled to announce the annual cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 this month, with experts estimating the increase may range from 3.5% to 3.6%.
