Hospital doctors across Northern Ireland are scheduled to undertake strike action in November as a dispute over pay compensation persists. The British Medical Association has announced that resident doctors will conduct a full 24-hour strike beginning at 07:00 on 20 November and continuing until 07:00 the following day. Separately, consultants and specialist, associate specialist and speciality grade doctors will strike from 07:00 on 23 November through 07:00 the next morning.
During both strike periods, emergency services will continue to operate fully while most routine and elective procedures will be suspended, maintaining what is termed Christmas Day cover. The BMA has cautioned that doctors remain willing to intensify industrial action if substantive progress is not made on addressing their compensation concerns. This action follows previous strike activity undertaken by the same groups in June.
The union contends that physician compensation has declined relative to inflation, dropping more than 26% over the past 18 years due to repeated pay awards that have fallen below inflation rates. BMA representatives have stressed that fair compensation is essential for recruiting and retaining medical professionals and for sustaining safe healthcare service delivery. Concerns have been raised about whether the minimum annual pay uplift for 2026/27, provided to doctors in other parts of the United Kingdom, will be implemented in Northern Ireland and the timing of any such implementation.
The strike announcement coincides with the Royal College of Nursing’s decision to ballot its members regarding potential industrial and strike action over similar pay grievances. Nursing staff in Northern Ireland have not yet received pay awards that have been distributed to their counterparts in England and Wales, despite a recommendation earlier in the year from the NHS pay review body for a 3.3% increase across all pay bands. The Department of Health stated that the health minister supports implementation of the 2026/27 award and restoration of pay parity with NHS England colleagues at the earliest opportunity.
