Optivolt Raises $32M to Build the Brain for Solar Panels of the Future

Optivolt, a San Francisco-based power electronics company, announced a $32M Series A funding round led by VXI Capital, bringing total capital raised to $42M. The round included participation from RA Capital, Valo Ventures, and Atlas Innovate, along with backing from industry veterans including founding Enphase CEO Paul Nahi, former SunPower CEO Tom Werner, and former New York energy official Richard Kauffman.

The company has developed technology called the Power Balancer, which embeds active power electronics directly into solar panels to manage energy distribution in real time among cell groups. According to the company, this addresses power losses that occur from shade, weather conditions, dirt accumulation, and uneven panel degradation. The Power Balancer operates at 99.4 percent conversion efficiency and replaces conventional bypass diodes while incorporating rapid shutdown and monitoring capabilities, potentially eliminating the need for separate module-level optimizers and microinverters.

Optivolt’s nine-year development process drew on aerospace engineering expertise to address thermal challenges associated with embedding electronics within panels. The company has obtained 19 issued patents with 27 additional applications pending, along with UL certifications for its integrated junction-box enclosure, panel-integrated electronics, and rapid-shutdown systems. The company reports that more than 20,000 panels incorporating the Power Balancer technology have already shipped.

In internal testing, panels with the technology produced up to six times more power than panels using external optimizers under defined shade scenarios. The company plans to use the new financing to expand manufacturing capacity and deploy the technology across residential, commercial, and utility-scale solar installations, including systems designed to power data centers.

Optivolt’s long-term vision involves transforming solar panels into intelligent, connected nodes capable of managing individual performance while coordinating with broader energy systems. The company frames its technology as addressing the gap between solar panel efficiency under laboratory conditions and actual performance in real-world environmental conditions.
