Optivolt Raises $32M to Build the Brain for Solar Panels of the Future

Optivolt announced a $32M Series A funding round led by VXI Capital, bringing the company’s total capital raised to $42M. The investment includes participation from RA Capital, Valo Ventures, and Atlas Innovate, with backing from prominent solar industry figures including founding Enphase CEO Paul Nahi, former SunPower CEO Tom Werner, and former New York energy official Richard Kauffman.

The San Francisco-based company has developed what it describes as an intelligence layer for solar panels through its Power Balancer technology. This system embeds active power electronics directly within solar panels to manage energy distribution among cell groups in real time. According to the company, this approach addresses energy losses caused by shade, weather, dirt accumulation, and uneven panel degradation. The technology replaces conventional bypass diodes and integrates rapid shutdown and monitoring capabilities, potentially eliminating the need for separate module-level optimizers, microinverters, or additional rapid-shutdown devices.

Optivolt’s engineering approach drew on aerospace industry expertise to address the technical challenge of managing heat generated by embedding power electronics inside panels. The company reports its Power Balancer operates at 99.4 percent conversion efficiency under typical conditions. The technology has already been incorporated into more than 20,000 shipped panels. Optivolt holds 19 issued patents with 27 additional applications pending and has obtained UL certifications for its integrated junction-box enclosure, panel-integrated electronics, rapid-shutdown system, and module safety standards.

The company plans to use the new funding to expand manufacturing capacity and scale deployment across residential, commercial, and utility-scale applications, including solar systems designed to support artificial intelligence data center operations. Company leadership emphasized that the funding represents a transition from technical development to broader market deployment of the technology.
