ORF-Enterprise Boards ‘Crème de la Crème’ – About a Sperm Bank Business – Produced by Whatever Pictures and a ‘Playful and Irreverent’ Series

Whatever Pictures has entered into a global sales agreement with ORF-Enterprise, the international distribution arm of Austrian broadcaster ORF, regarding the comedy drama series ‘Crème de la Crème.’ The show was commissioned by Finnish broadcaster YLE and is written and directed by a team including Jukka Vidgrén, Topi Koljonen, Henna Rinnekangas, Juuso Laatio, and Anna Heinämaa, with production by Vidgrén and Antti Kaarlela.

The narrative centers on Joonas, a young farmer managing his family’s dairy farm who faces financial instability. Confronted with the prospect of the farm’s collapse, he partners with friends to establish a sperm bank enterprise. According to Armin Luttenberger, Head of Content Sales International at ORF-Enterprise, the series’ distinctive quality derives from its Finnish identity while addressing universal themes including ambition, financial hardship, friendship, and moral compromises made in pursuit of security.

The production represents a departure from typical Nordic television exports. Where Scandinavian drama is internationally recognized for crime narratives and somber aesthetics, ‘Crème de la Crème’ adopts a lighter, more comedic approach while maintaining Nordic sensibilities. Luttenberger noted the series achieves cultural specificity without alienating international viewership.

Whatever Pictures is also developing additional content through partnerships and independent projects. The company collaborated with Norwegian production company Rein Film on ‘Silent Herd,’ a crime series set in a contemporary Sápmi community during the polar night. The narrative follows an investigator returning to their childhood home after a traumatic past to investigate suspicious deaths within a reindeer-herding family. Director Ken Are Bongo and writer Jens Martin Mienna, both Sámi, lead the creative team. Producer Aleksi Puranen emphasized the project aims for atmospheric storytelling grounded in specific cultural context rather than generic Nordic noir conventions. The companies reported previous collaborative success and shared commitments to authentic Northern storytelling with international scope.
