Oscars: U.K. Selects Iran Doc ‘Rehearsals for a Revolution’ as Best International Feature Entry

The United Kingdom has announced its official submission for the best international feature film category at the upcoming Academy Awards. The selected film is Rehearsals for a Revolution, directed by Pegah Ahangarani, which previously earned the L’Oeil d’Or for best documentary at Cannes Film Festival earlier in the year.

The documentary examines over four decades of Iranian history through multiple perspectives, including the filmmaker’s own experiences as an exile and accounts from family members and mentors. The work incorporates various archival materials including home video footage, street protest documentation, newspaper clippings, and recorded audio to construct a narrative about political oppression and persistent aspirations for change within the country. Ahangarani spent more than two and a half years developing the film in the U.K., collaborating with a team of British production professionals on writing, research, and editing duties.

The film debuted in the special screenings section at Cannes, subsequently screening at the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival. It received a U.K. theatrical release in September. Sony Pictures Classics will conduct Oscar-qualifying runs in major markets in December, followed by exclusive engagements at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles and Film Forum in New York beginning January 8, 2027, with wider domestic distribution planned in the weeks following.

The Academy will announce the 15-film shortlist for the best international feature category on December 15, with final nominees selected on January 21. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 14, 2027.
